Chunky wool loop carpet

Wool

Why we keep coming back to wool

It is the fibre on most of the floors we are proud of. Here is the plain version, without a laboratory claim we cannot stand behind.

Cross Carpets has been a family business since 1966, and on the Gold Coast since 1990. Wool is what we have recommended for living areas for that whole time, because it wears in a way that still looks like itself after years of feet. The Southport showroom is where you can feel that, not just read it. The ranges we line up for that visit are on the premium wool page.

What we actually notice on the job

Wool feels warm underfoot on a cool morning and it does not go clammy the way some smooth floors do in a Queensland afternoon. It marks less alarmingly than people fear when a drink is blotted quickly. It resists a flame better than many synthetic surfaces, which is one reason it has always been used in homes rather than only in formal rooms. And it is a renewable fibre, shorn rather than mined. Those are the reasons we give in the showroom. We will not invent a tog rating or a warranty year-count on this page.

Where wool belongs

Bedrooms, living rooms, studies and many staircases. A softer plush in a bedroom, a twist where the family actually lives, a loop when you want texture. The constructions are set out in types of carpet. Wet rooms stay in vinyl plank. If the stairs are the showpiece, look at runners as well as wall-to-wall.

Bremworth and the rest of the floor

Bremworth's New Zealand wool ranges are ones we keep returning to: Galet, Marlo, Poraka and Samurai. They are not the only wool in the building. If you have a picture of something we have not put on the website, it may still be on a rack. Come and look, or borrow samples.

Questions we hear in the showroom

Is wool practical on the Gold Coast?

Yes, in the rooms that stay dry. Bedrooms, living rooms and many stairs suit it. We will talk you out of wool in a wet laundry or a kitchen that is regularly soaked.

Do you only sell one wool brand?

No. Bremworth is a large part of what we show, including Galet, Marlo, Poraka and Samurai, and there are other wool ranges on the floor. The shortlist is on the carpet page. The showroom holds more.

Can I try a sample at home?

Yes. Samples can go home on loan so you can see the colour in your own light. The measure and quote at home is free.

Care, once it is down, is covered in carpet cleaning and maintenance.
