Carpet in a family room

Carpet care

Looking after a carpet is mostly habit

Nothing here is a secret product. It is the same advice we give across the counter in Southport.

A carpet lasts longer when the grit is lifted out of it and spills are dealt with while they are still on the surface. The fibre — wool, a wool blend, or a tougher synthetic in a rental — changes the fine detail, which is why we would rather see the carpet, or the sample, than hand you a generic bottle.

Vacuuming

Vacuum weekly, and go slowly over the paths people actually walk. A fast pass looks done and leaves the grit that cuts the yarn. Stairs and the track from the door to the kitchen deserve extra attention. If the carpet is a soft plush, vacuum marks are normal. They are the pile lying in one direction, not damage.

Spills

Blot with a clean cloth. Do not scrub. Scrubbing spreads the spill and can rough up the tips of the yarn. Work from the outside of the mark inward. Water-based spills on wool are often less dramatic than they look once they are blotted and left to dry. Anything oily, dyed or old enough to have set is a conversation — call (07) 5591 2777 and describe it.

A proper clean

Plan on a professional clean every 12 to 18 months in a normal home. Pets, beach sand and a house full of children shorten that. Mats at the doors, inside and out, keep a surprising amount of grit off the carpet in the first place.

Underlay is part of care

Carpet on a tired, thin underlay wears faster and feels worse. Our quotes include underlay with the take-up, the flooring and the fitting, so it is not an extra discovered on install day. More on what underlay is doing is in the underlay guide.

Questions we hear in the showroom

How often should carpet be vacuumed?

Weekly is the habit that matters, and slower passes pick up more than a quick rush across the room. High-traffic paths and stairs can use a second pass.

What should I do with a spill?

Blot it. Do not rub. Rubbing pushes the spill deeper and can fuzz the surface. If it is more than a small blot, call us and we will tell you whether it needs a proper clean.

How often does carpet need a professional clean?

For most homes, every 12 to 18 months. A busy household, pets or a rental turnover can need it sooner. Door mats and a decent underlay do as much for the life of the carpet as the clean does.

Choosing the construction that is easy to live with is half the care. Start with carpet types, then see wool on the showroom shortlist.
