Stairs
Stair runners, measured on your flight
A runner carpets the path you walk and leaves the stair itself visible. We template it at home and fit it with our own team.
The nose of each tread takes the wear. A runner puts a tough, comfortable surface on that line and leaves a border of timber, or whatever the stair is made of, on either side. It is one of the custom jobs we measure, make and fit from the Southport showroom.
Why people choose a runner
Grip on a polished tread, a quieter flight beside bedrooms, and the wear kept to the middle so the timber at the sides stays clear of the track. Wool is especially pleasant underfoot on a cool morning. The timber still shows. The runner does the daily work.
Wool, sisal or a pattern
Plain wool is soft and lets a strong staircase speak. Sisal is the textured coastal choice, always with a bound edge, and only where feet stay dry. Chevron and herringbone wool add movement on a long flight. A patterned loop or a heavier twist is what we point to when the stairs are the main route through the house — including ranges such as Prestige Antarctica when a plain hard-wearing twist is the honest answer. That recommendation is made on the flight, not from a menu.

How it is fitted
A waterfall runner flows over each nosing. A Hollywood fit tucks tight under the nosing for a crisp edge. Edges are finished with binding or whipping. Stair rods are optional. Winders and landings are templated tread by tread. The quote covers take-up if an old runner is coming out, underlay, the carpet and fitting.
More photographs of waterfall, Hollywood, chevron and sisal flights are on the patterned carpet page. Wall-to-wall carpet on stairs, rather than a runner, starts with which construction can take the nose of the tread.
Questions we hear in the showroom
Do you measure the stairs at home?
Yes. The measure and quote are free. Winders, landings and straight flights are templated on site, not guessed from a photo.
What is the difference between a waterfall and a Hollywood fit?
A waterfall runner flows over the nose of each tread. A Hollywood fit is upholstered tight under the nose, which gives a sharper line. We do both. Recent photos are on our patterned carpet page.
Wool or sisal on stairs?
Both. Wool is soft and quiet. Sisal is the textured, dry-foot option and wants a bound edge. If the entry is often wet, we will usually say wool rather than sisal.
