Patterned carpet for Gold Coast homes
Herringbone wool, woven florals and geometrics, and the quiet patterns that hide a hallway. Seen at our Southport showroom, then fitted in your home.
A plain carpet disappears into the room. A patterned carpet does a job: it sets the character of a hallway, hides the wear on a stair, and gives a formal room something to look at when the furniture is simple. On the Gold Coast that might be a herringbone wool in a coastal house, a small geometric in an apartment, or a custom floral that belongs to one room.
Cross Carpets, at 4 Brolga Avenue, Southport, is family owned since 1966. We fit patterned carpet in homes, and the gallery shows the same kind of woven pattern in hotel lobbies and guest rooms. Call (07) 5591 2777 or book a free measure and quote. The wider wool shortlist is on our carpet page.
Styles, and the construction they belong to
Pattern is a construction as much as a picture. A woven pattern, such as an Axminster, has the design built into the cloth, so the drawing holds as it wears. Our custom carpet is woven Axminster in an 80% wool / 20% nylon blend. The Capsule Collection has florals, geometrics, traditionals and contemporary prints, coloured from a 12-colour palette. The Kirman Collection leans to florals, scrolls and traditional patterns. Both start from 20sqm, so a feature room or a long hallway is enough.
A patterned loop is different. The design comes from two or more yarn colours in the loop, so the surface stays low and practical. Bremworth Clarence, in the wool catalogue, is a heavy-duty patterned loop with a two-colour herringbone — a practical choice for a hall or a living room that takes shoes. Cut-and-loop sits between the two: low loops and a higher cut pile make a texture you feel as well as see, when you want movement without a large motif.

Scale, hallways and living rooms
Scale matters more than people expect. A large floral in a narrow Southport hallway feels crowded, and the repeat may never sit evenly along the run. A small geometric or a broken herringbone reads calmly in the same space and still hides the traffic line. In a big living room at Sanctuary Cove or Broadbeach, a larger repeat has room to breathe. Bring a floor plan and we will look at the repeat before anything is ordered. Woven lead times follow the weaving schedule, so it is worth starting early.
Hallways and entries take the most steps, and the most light from the front door. A tonal pattern hides the track a plain plush shows within a year. Bedrooms can take a plusher patterned cut pile, because the wear is lighter. Media rooms often want a darker pattern so the screen stays rich — that is on our home cinema carpet page.
Stairs and runners
The nose of each tread wears first. A very soft plush, patterned or plain, shows that wear. A patterned loop, or a wool twist with a quiet design, hides it. Prestige and Bremworth both have heavier twists and loops we use on stairs. Prestige Antarctica is the one we point to when the flight is the main route through the house and a plain, hard-wearing twist is the honest answer.
A stair runner leaves the timber at the edges and carpets only the walking line. Sisal runners and wool runners are both something we fit, with bound edges, traditional rods or wrapped treads. If the stair belongs to a patterned hallway, the same carpet can continue as a fitted flight or as a runner. The quote is still the whole job: take-up, underlay, carpet and fitting by our own installers.
When a rug is the better patterned floor
Not every patterned floor should be wall-to-wall. A rug puts the design where you sit and leaves timber, vinyl or a plain carpet everywhere else. We cut rugs from showroom carpet to your size and edge — rectangles, rounds, ovals and runners — with an underlay so they stay put. Wall-to-wall is the better answer when you want the pattern under every foot.
Wool, nylon, and fitting the repeat
Wool wears in and suits a hallway you want to keep. Nylon and wool-nylon blends are the practical choice where spills and wheels are weekly, and solution-dyed nylon keeps its colour because the colour is in the fibre. There is more on construction in our flooring advice.
A pattern needs care at the seams: the repeat has to match, and on stairs the motif should meet the tread. A stable underlay keeps a woven carpet flat and a runner from creeping. We measure, then quote take-up, underlay, carpet and fitting as one number.

Common questions
What counts as patterned carpet?
Any carpet with a design you can see: a woven floral or geometric, a two-colour herringbone loop, or a cut-and-loop texture. The design might be woven in, as with Axminster, or made by the yarn colours in the pile.
Is patterned carpet practical in hallways and on stairs?
Yes, and it is often the practical choice. A tonal pattern hides the traffic line a plain plush shows. On stairs, the construction still has to be tough enough for the nose of the tread. We point you to a patterned loop or a heavier twist when the flight is the main route through the house.
Can I have the pattern as a rug instead?
Yes. A rug puts the design where you sit and leaves timber, vinyl or a plain carpet everywhere else. We cut rugs from showroom carpet to your size and edge, with an underlay so they stay put. Wall-to-wall is the better answer when you want the pattern under every foot.
Which patterned ranges can I see at Cross Carpets?
Bremworth Clarence, a heavy-duty herringbone loop in New Zealand wool, is in the catalogue on our carpet page. Custom Axminster, in the Capsule and Kirman collections, is woven to order in an 80% wool and 20% nylon blend from 20sqm. The showroom holds more than the shortlist.
Where do I see patterned carpet on the Gold Coast?
At the Cross Carpets showroom, 4 Brolga Avenue, Southport, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm, and Saturday by appointment. We fit homes across the Gold Coast and travel for premium wool and custom work in Brisbane and Byron Bay.
